I chose to base my packaging design on the 1950s/60s because I felt it was such a culturally rich time within society, fuelled by experimentation and rebellion in art, music and society. From the Vietnam War to the Moon Landing, the 60s is in my opinion the most important decade. It’s ideals are still relevant to the modern world.

Pictured above are a few examples of contemporary packaging design which I found to be of inspiration. The top three reflect an idea I had; to shape the packaging like an aluminium can. This concept is derived from the introduction of soda cans in the 1960s. I might think of using bio degradable packaging, as the recycling logo was created in the 60s. I feel using a can shape for biscuits will help them stand out on shelves

When first beginning my research, I discovered the work of Saul Bass, a highly influential artist of the 1950s/60s whose work is still celebrated today. I loved his work for its near block like feel, the use of colour against mainly black out silhouettes. Bass is a fine example of how simplicity is classic and stands the test of time. However, Bass is not really the feel I am going for with my packaging design
Above is examples of art and design that was popular at the time, i.e, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichenstien. Warhol was the manager of the infamous Velvet Underground and designed one of my favourite album from the 60s ‘The Velvet Underground & Nico’. I felt it can be compared to Bass in the sense of simplicity and flatness.

However, my preferred art style of the 60s was that used in the Psychedelic posters at the time. As a big fan of the genre Psychedelic Rock, including bands such as Pink Floyd, The 13th Floor Elevators and Jefferson Airplane, I felt this would be a great style for me to explore more of. One of my favourite aspects is the manipulation of text as well as the colours used.
We can still see the relevance of 60s psychedelia in the resurgence of modern Psychedelic/Stoner rock bands, such as King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats, Electric Wizard and Acid King to name a few.
However, I have decided to base my project on the various subcultures of the 60s, including beatniks, hippies and mods. As I feel it would be an interesting idea to do different flavours of biscuits for each subculture.
